(NYT25) NEW YORK -- Nov. 17, 2002 -- OBIT-EBAN -- Ambassador Abba Eban, the erudite diplomat whose oratory and wit gained admiration and sympathy for Israel in the perilous first 30 years of its independence, died Sunday in a hospital near Tel Aviv, Israel, Foreign Ministry and hospital officials said. He was 87. Ambassador Eban shown at the United Nations in 1956. (The New York Times)
