(NYT24) HEBRON, West Bank -- Nov. 17, 2002 -- MIDEAST-2 -- In Hebron, on the site that 12 Israelis were killed in an ambush, a new Palestinian settlement was born on Saturday. In the first 24 hours of the settlement's life, its builders were trying to figure out how to build their shelters as soldiers set up a seven-foot-high cement barrier around the new community. Nowhere else in Israel and its occupied territories do Israelis and Palestinians live as close together and as far apart as in Hebron. Settlers confer on how to expand their day-old encampment, made mostly of tents and makeshift shelters, as a crane lifts the concrete shields into place. (Rina Castelnuovo/The New York Times)
