(NYT59) NEW YORK -- Nov. 13, 2002 -- Adv. for Sun., Nov. 17 -- THEATER-MIKE-NICHOLS-2 -- The writers were each told to write a10-minute, two-character play that takes place on a bare stage. Jon Robin Baitz and Terrence McNally did precisely that. Nora Ephron offered a monologue she had written in Harper's Bazaar. Steve Martin created a conversation between a husband and wife in bed. Elaine May turned in a playlet about a man and a woman at a party. Jules Feiffer submitted a scene that had been performed on Martha's Vineyard. Some of the writers contributed because of Friends in Deed, an organization that provides support to those affected by life-threatening illness and because director Mike Nichols asked them to. The program, entitled "Short Talks on the Universe,'' is scheduled for Nov. 17 and Nov. 18 at the Eugene O'Neill Theater in New York. Jules Feiffer will lend his talent to the project. Feiffer at his home in Manhattan in June 2000. (Sara Krulwich/The New York Times)
