(NYT22) UNDATED -- Nov. 13, 2002 -- CIR-GAME-THEORY -- New games known as "platformers," are 3-D descendants of the old 2-D side-scrolling games in which the game character would jump from one platform - a cliff, an ice floe, a cloud - to another, collecting tokens and battling monsters. The great challenge for designers of platformers is to differentiate themselves from the pack. Top, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus and bottom, and Nintendo's Super Mario Sunshine.
