(NYT25) NEW YORK -- Nov. 11, 2002 -- OLD-FASHIONED-BARBER-2 -- For 52 years, Claudio Caponigro, 71, has watched through the window of his barbershop as Italian Harlem has changed around him. But, with a few exceptions, he and his shop have hardly changed at all. Claudio Barber Shop, in its own tumbledown shack-like building on 116th Street between First and Second Avenues, is a touchstone, its fusty customs and etiquette appealing to people who are not always mesmerized by the siren songs of modern life.
