(NYT9) LOS ANGELES -- Nov. 30, 2002 -- HOLLYWOOD-CEMETERY-3 -- The gates of Hollywood Memorial, which is adjacent to Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, were padlocked in the late 90's. The crematory lay in shambles, and the cemetery bordered on bankruptcy. Although it was the resting place of Hollywood greats like Rudolph Valentino and gangster Bugsy Siegel, it was so run-down that relatives were disinterring their loved ones and burying them elsewhere. Then along came Tyler Cassity, the new president of Hollywood Forever and his brother Brent in 1998, demure scions of a Missouri funeral home family and an inspiration for the hit television series "Six Feet Under." The crypts of Cecil B. DeMille and his wife Constance at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery as seen in November 2002. (Monica Almeida/The New York Times)
