(NYT23) TEL AVIV -- Feb. 6, 2001 -- ISRAEL-POLITICS-3 -- Likud party members celebrate victory as Likud party leader Ariel Sharon, second from left, was declared the new Israeli prime minister, Tuesday. Sharon called for the Palestinians to return to the path of peace and his political foes to rally behind him. "I call on the Palestinians to cast off the path of violence and return to the path of dialogue to resolve the differences between us," said Sharon in a victory speech before crowds of jubilant supporters in Tel Aviv.
