(NYT24) CRAWFORD, Texas -- Feb. 5, 2001 -- PENTAGON-WOLFOWITZ -- On Monday, President Bush announced that he intended to return Paul Wolfowitz to the Pentagon, this time as deputy secretary of defense, responsible for managing the Pentagon's sprawling bureaucracy and, perhaps more than his predecessors, involving himself in foreign policy. Wolfowitz's nomination requires Senate confirmation. Bush at his ranch near Crawford, Tex., last December with his foreign policy advisers Condoleezza Rice and Wolfowitz.
