Nurses at U.S. Army Camp Hospital No. 11, 1918. During World War One thousands of women served at home and overseas as Nurses working in military hospitals or in Casualty Clearing Stations closer to the battlefield. They provided vital skills and fulfilled an important role, one which is often overshadowed by the events on the battlefields themselves. Camp Hospital No. 11 was established March 12, 1918, at St. Nazaire, base section No. 1. The personnel comprised Sanitary Squad No. 1 and Field Hospital No. 44. When first organized, the hospital occupied a standard type B, 300-bed unit, but later, when the activities of the port demanded more hospital facilities, necessary buildings were added. During its existence, this hospital cared for a total of 12,291 medical and surgical cases, including 5,085 cases of venereal disease.
