On the Western Front during Battle of Menin Road. Scottish territorials being examined in a dressing station. Belgium, 1914. The Battle of the Menin Road Ridge was the third British general attack of the Third Battle of Ypres. The battle took place September 20-25, 1917 on the Western Front. The British infantry succeeded in capturing most of their objectives and then holding them against German counter-attacks, inflicting many casualties on the local German defenders. British casualties are given as 20,255; 3,148 being killed. The Dressing Stations were generally manned by the Field Ambulances of the Royal Army Medical Corps. The set up dressing stations in existing buildings, underground dug-outs and bunkers, because they afforded some protection from enemy shell fire and aerial attack.
