Transmission electron micrograph of the liver of a normal hamster showing the endoplasmic reticulum. The groups of associated cisternae of the reticulum in liver are arranged more or less parallel, but they are less closely spaced and less precisely ordered than in other protein-secreting exocrine cells. The mitochondria are generally in close proximity to the areas of rough (granular) reticulum.
