Labor party central committee meeting
Former prime minister Ehud Barak officially announced his withdrawal of candidacy for Labor Party leadership Sunday afternoon during a central committee meeting in the Dan Panorama hotel in Tel Aviv. Barak called on party members to rally around current party head Shimon Peres.
"Throughout the years, there have been disagreements between us, but even Rabin and Peres knew during historic times to join hands," he said.
Meanwhile, acting Science Minister Matan Vilnai called on Peres during the meeting to withdraw his candidacy as well, saying he should continue his various political activities, but not as head of the Labor Party.
In the shadow of a police investigation into fraudulent Labor Party membership applications, the party's central committee met Sunday to determine a date for the primaries. The committee is expected to set the date for November 9.
