A SIGN OF WEALTH..... A golden jet of water showers down on a floating plantation of chrysanthemums ahead of this Wednesday's Lunar New Year. The golden spray, caused by the setting sun, and a woman preparing the flowers for the festive holidays celebrated locally and across the nation in Sa Dec City, Dong Thap Province, Vietnam. Bui Van Hai who lives in Ho Chi Minh City said, "This floating garden of chrysanthemums is cultivated on wooden, bamboo or steel frames for 6 months or more, depending on weather conditions. This kind of flower field is always pumped full of water so that farmers find it easy to care for their flowers by watering them, killing insects and moving the flowers to markets. Farmers will pump water like this to help kill insects effectively, so the plants benefit in two ways." "Flowers will be moved to a wholesale market in order to sell them for the upcoming Tet holidays. This is a vital and important feast in each Vietnamese family. Vietnamese people use these spring baskets of chrysanthemums to decorate their homes and collect good fortune on the lunar new year. A basket of chrysanthemums symbolises wealth, luck and good fortune. Each basket of chrysanthemums is sold between £2.50-£3.20.
