PHOTO: EAST NEWS/AFP People walk through a temporary morgue in Banda Aceh, 27 December 2004 as they try and find missing family members after a devastating quake and series of tidal waves struck the province. Indonesia's remote Aceh region, on the northern tip of Sumatra island has emerged as one of the worst-affected areas with thousands of fatalities after taking the full force of the quake and the tsunami that followed on Sunday. The devastation wrought by the tremor and tidal waves is likely to be exacerbated by the fact that Aceh is in the throes of a 28-year independence struggle that has left the region a crumbling war zone off limits to outsiders.
