Many of Britain’s most famous landmarks have been futuristically rebuilt with sweet treats for London’s new The Gingerbread City exhibition. Battersea Power Station, Brighton Pavilion, the London Eye, the Royal Opera House, and Smithfield Market, are among the buildings depicted in the sugary city. The festive showcase, designed by top UK architects and designers, opens Saturday, 30th November, at The Gaumont building on London’s King’s Road in Chelsea. Organised by the Museum of Architecture, a UK charity, this annual exhibition challenges participants to create gingerbread buildings inspired by a theme. This year’s concept, Recycled City, focuses on repurposing old buildings, transforming them into vibrant new spaces that address modern issues such as housing, education, transport, and climate. The exhibition highlights how reimagining existing structures can preserve heritage while meeting today’s environmental and social challenges. Over 45 architectural practices contributed to the exhibition, crafting intricate biscuit creations that blend creativity with practical design. Among the gingerbread models are inspirations drawn from real-life projects, such as the Truman Brewery in East London, Spitbank Fort in Portsmouth, and Hay Castle in Hay-on-Wye, Wales. Visitors will also encounter imaginative “dream” projects, including cosy residential schemes using London Underground tunnels and a futuristic reimagining of the Brutalist Space House as a climate monitoring facility in 2080. Melissa Woolford, Founder and Director of the Museum of Architecture and The Gingerbread City, said: “For centuries, cities like London have transformed old places into exciting new spaces. The Gingerbread City showcases how sustainable design can breathe new life into our environment while preserving its heritage.” Held at The Gaumont building—a landmark revitalised over 14 years—the exhibition runs from Saturday, 30 November, to Sunday, 29 December 2024. Tickets are available via The Gingerbread City website. This year’s exhibition is made possible through the support of Cadogan, along with partners Finsa, PDP, Hornby, Smack, U-Build, The Invisible Agency, TM, and Tibbalds. The Gingerbread City continues to spark conversations about urban living, inspiring visitors with its edible take on architecture and sustainable design.
