CITY by David Levene: ANDAHUAYLAS, PERU LONGITUDE: -73o 39' 00.31" 4/9/07 Plaza de Armas, Andahuaylas, in the central highlands of Peru. Around 500 women come, along with young and old relatives, to the main square in Andahuaylas to receive their monthly payment of 100 Soles (around L15.50) as part of a Government-run social compensation programme. The money is intended to help pay for schooling and medicine for children. The main programme goal is that that more children receive a proper education rather than engaging in various forms of child-labour. Only women are allowed to collect the money due to concerns that men would not spend the money responsibly. Some women travel for up to six hours by road to reach La Plaza de Armas, which contains the province's only National Bank where the money can be distributed. Over half of the world's population now lives in cities, but how do we live, what kind of places are we creating, and how are these stories being told?
