Jan Paweł II - archiwalia
Card. Joseph Ratzinger and Pope John Paul II. 1992 Pope John Paul II, still recovering from surgery, has designated Vatican cardinals to stand in for him in the ceremonies of Easter Week. In previous years, the 84-year-old pontiff has taken on the key role in the heavy liturgical program in St Peter's Basilica, starting from Palm Sunday and ending on Easter Sunday in 2005. But four weeks after throat surgery to ease breathing difficulties, Vatican sources said he is not expected to participate in this year's ceremonies. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger,(picture) considered a possible papal successor, will preside over the Easter vigil liturgy. 508104
