Laos, Champassak, June 23, 2009 An emblematic companion. After a ceremony at Vat Phu, the elephants hired for the occasion cross the Mekong by ferry and return to the region of the Boloven Plateau. These sacred animals have always fascinated the Laotians, former citizens of the "Million Elephant Kingdom". Today most of these magnificent animals have been captured or trained. There are only 500 wild elephants left in the forest; two thirds of the trained elephants are usually put to work in the forest. Laos, Champassak, 23 juin 2009 Un compagnon emblematique. Aprcs une ceremonie au Vat Phu, les elephants loues pour l'occasion ont emprunte le bac pour franchir le Mekong et rejoindre la region du Plateau des Boloven. Animaux sacres, ils fascinent toujours les Lao, anciens sujets du ??Royaume du Million d'?lephants??. La majorite des animaux sont captifs ou domestiques, seuls 500 elephants sauvages demeurent en foret. Les deux tiers des effectifs existants sont generalement affectes r des travaux forestiers.
