Supporters of the opposition presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko wave a giant Ukrainian flag after the announcement of the exit pools results during a rally in the center of Kiev, 21 November 2004. A pro-Western opposition leader appeared to have won Ukraine's presidential runoff, exit polls showed after voting ended in the bitterly-fought contest that many had feared could trigger turmoil and even violence. Viktor Yushchenko secured 54 percent of the vote compared with the 43 percent by his pro-Russia rival, Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich, according to the independent Razumkov Ukrainian Centre for Economic and Political Studies and the Kiev International Institute for Sociology (KMIS).
