Veterans of the Stalag Luft III Prisoner of War Camp Charles Clarke OBE and Andy Wisemen Visit the Site in Zagan, Poland - 15 Aug 2008
Former prisoners of war Charles Clarke and Andy Wisemen have returned to the Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp in Poland to honour the heroes of The Great Escape. The pair travelled to the camp to open a replica hut, which is next to Great Escape Museum in Zagan, and which has been built in memory of the hundreds of Allied prisoners who were involved in the daring breakout, later immortalised in the film starring Steve McQueen. The plan involved digging three tunnels - called Tom, Dick and Harry. On the night of March 24 1944, 76 PoWs made it out through Harry but the tunnel fell 30 yards short of vital woodland cover and their escape was discovered. Of the 76 only three soldiers made it back to the UK. The others were captured; 23 were sent back to prison and the other 50 were shot on Hitler's orders. An RAF team has built the replica of Hut 104, which housed the entrance to tunnel Harry; they now hope to recreate the tunnel itself.
