Croatia, Karanac, 12 November 2017 Residents of Dunja Agriculture Economy in Karanac, Croatia, 31 year old Ana Molnar and her boyfriend 31 year old Domagoj Tot. Both live with intellectual disability and take medication to counter depression. In addition to this, Domagoj takes anti-anxiety medication. The Center for Inclusion based in Osijek, Croatia has made its mission to promote the development of society in which people with intellectual disabilities can lead self determined lives. They purchased a house in the village of Karanac with funds from The Open Society Foundation Mental Health Initiative in 2013 to house four of their residents. The first residents, two couples, moved in at the end of 2015. Speaking about the reason for opening the house, the Director of the NGO Center for Inclusion, Vlasta Skorak said ??sWe were not satisfied with the beneficiaries possibilities for working activities in Osijek (the nearest city, where the NGO is based). We looked for an opportunity to employ them. The house in Karanac made me think they could produce their own food, that we could have an exhibit of local historical items, and a it could be a place for tourists to visit.??? Karanac attracts tourists year round. She adds: ??sIt???s good for them to move away form the city. It???s quiet and provides a place to rest.??? They have named the house Dunja Agriculture Economy. Domagoj and Ana met on the first day Ana came to Inclusion. Domagoj had long hair at the time, he says the first thing Ana said to him was ??syou look lie a girl.??? Domagoj turned red and laughed he says. But Ana says it was ??slove at first sight.??? They have been together for seven years. Talking about the future Domagoj says ??swe hope to have a family together.??? Domagoj lived in institutions from infancy until he was 21 years old.
