Illustration of the various sensitivities of the lemniscus system. They are made of axons that leave special skin receptors (fine touch) and receptors located in the joint capsules and ligaments (conscious proprioreceptive sensitivity). They move up into the marrow, penetrating the medulla oblongata and relay to the nucleus gracilis and cuneiform. After crossing on the median line (sensitive decussation), these pathways form the medial lemniscus (Reil?s ribbon) which goes all the way up the brainstem behind the pyramidal tracts to reach the thalamus, the last relay before the parietal lobe in the cortex.
