Cernan's checklist open on the details for the mission, attached to the glove. Boston, USA: SPACE MEMORABILIA once used by the last man to ever set foot on the moon has been auctioned complete with LUNAR DUST still remaining as a testament to this last great feat of human space travel. The gem of the collection was the Apollo 17 cuff checklist which sold for a stellar sum of Ł306,397 on September 23rd, 2023, in the first step for the buyer to hold a piece of history unique to humanity. One image shows the checklist in its museum-quality display case, attached to a replica of Commander Gene Cernan's left-handed Apollo A7-LB EVA glove, crafted by renowned artist Ryan Nagata. Another image shows the checklist’s playful cartoon additions of astronaut-dogs exploring the lunar surface. These were inserted by the backup crew, which was a charming Apollo tradition. Another image shows a visual testament to the checklist's lunar adventure in 1972, with Cernan saluting the American flag with the checklist strapped to his wrist. Sold by RR Auction in Boston, US, this cuff checklist was an indispensable guide for the astronauts' extravehicular activities, which remained on Cernan’s wrist for seven-hours and 12-minutes while he was on the mission. The checklist pages bear the smudges of grey lunar dust, evidence of its lunar pedigree. Comprising 25 spiral-bound double-sided pages and measuring at 3.5-inches by 2.5-inches, the checklist is a comprehensive guide. Encapsulated are preparation procedures, maps, and task lists that aided the goals of EVA-1. This included unloading the Lunar Roving Vehicle, deploying the American flag and collecting moon rock samples. The Apollo 17 mission was the last to land humans on the lunar surface and marked the pinnacle of NASA's exploration efforts, which was highlighted by Bobby Livingston, Executive VP at RR Auction. "With its smudged pages and the unmistakable marks of lunar dust, this cuff checklist tells a story of determination and exploration," said Livingston. “It's not just an item; it's a symbol of humankind's relentless pursuit of the unknown.” A detailed letter of provenance, signed by Gene Cernan himself reflects on the cuff checklist's significance for his 1972 mission. "EVA1 was a high level work period. The cuff checklist reflects that by being completely smothered with lunar dust,” said Cernan. “This cuff checklist represents one of the rarest of Apollo artefacts as a piece of vital equipment that I used during my excursions on the lunar surface in the Valley of Taurus-Littrow." As Cernan prepared to climb the ladder back onto Apollo 17 from the moon’s surface for the final time, he spoke these last spoken words by a human being standing on the lunar surface: “Bob, this is Gene, and I'm on the surface; and, as I take man's last step from the surface, back home for some time to comeÃłbut we believe not too long into the futureÃłI'd like to just (say) what I believe history will record: that America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow. And, as we leave the Moon at Taurus–Littrow, we leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17.” mediadrumimages / @RRAuction
