The Turkish President faced mounting criticism of his government's slow response to February's earthquakes as survivors used their hands and basic tools to pull people trapped under the ruins, yet to the surprise of many, his ruling AKP party came out on top in the majority of cities affected, in the first round of Presidential Elecections on May 14, 2023.
