Camp Saddle Aurora Orson CANTERBURY, NEW ZEALAND. INCREDIBLE LIVE IMAGES captured at 4am on April 25th 2023 show the aurora shining bright. Images captured show the northern lights dancing in hues of pink, purple, blue and green. The phenomenon was captured by photographer Paul Wilson (35) from New Zealand. Paul captured the Northern Lights on a hike through Craigieburn Forest Park in Canterbury, New Zealand, reaching an altitude of 3,280ft. Paul captured the images on his two Canon R5 cameras and an assortment of Sigma Art lenses, including 14mm, 28mm, and 40mm. To prevent lens fogging in the freezing conditions he attached lens warmers with power banks. “It was absolutely incredible being up the mountain by myself and witnessing this amazing aurora display, I was so excited watching the beams dance across the sky,” said Paul. “I set off on a hike through Craigieburn Forest Park in Canterbury, New Zealand, reaching an altitude of 1,600 meters. “Anticipating a night of Milky Way imaging but also the possibility of this event, I carried most of my photography equipment, along with a tent and plenty of warm clothes. “The 30kg load was the heaviest I had ever carried up a mountain. “Originally, I planned to camp on the mountain. However, the adrenaline from capturing the aurora fueled me to hike back down at 4am. “Eager to see my work, I immediately transferred the files to my PC and began editing the images and video. “My passion for astrophotography began the moment I captured my first Milky Way image. “Witnessing the camera unveil the hidden, colorful world above us left me amazed, and I've been fascinated with the night sky ever since.” ENDS
