Kim Jong-nam (seated front right) eldest son of Kim Jong-il, leader of North Korea (seated front left). From roughly 1994 to 2001, he was considered to be the heir apparent to his father and the next leader of North Korea. Following a much-publicised botched attempt to enter Japan using a fake passport and visit Tokyo Disneyland in May 2001, he was thought to have fallen out of favour with his father. From at least 2003 onwards, Kim Jong-nam lived in exile outside North Korea. His younger paternal half-brother Kim Jong-un was named heir apparent in September 2010. In exile, Kim became known as an occasional critic of his family's regime and an advocate for reform. Kim Jong-nam died in Malaysia in February 2017 under suspicious circumstances. It is believed that he was assassinated by two women, speculated to be North Korean agents, at the airport using poison. He was believed to be traveling under the name of "Kim Chol" at the time.
