Lieut. Hugh C. Thompson, a helicopter pilot who received the distinguished flying cross for rescuing children at My Lai, Vietnam, was to have been the government's first witness in the court martial trial of My Lai defendant Staff Sgt. David Mitchell, Oct. 15, 1970. Thompson leaves the court after the judge barred him from testifying until a congressional investigating subcommittee releases the testimony it took from him. Four prosecution witnesses were barred by the judge. (AP Photo/Ted Powers)
