From the desert of lava dust between the twin peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the African continent, appears Mount Kibo. Seemingly a short walk in the morning's crystal air, reaching it entails a six-mile trudge across shimmering lava and a 4,000 foot climb up scree, rock and snow slopes to the volcano's rim. The rarified air near the 19,300-foot summit causes nausea and splitting headaches for climbers. Every step is lead-weighted agony, but the climber must keep moving or freeze.
