Irena Szewinska of Poland crosses the finish line winning the 400m final in a world-record time of 49 sec 29, on July 29, 1976, in Montreal during the Olympic Games. Szewinska won the gold medal in front of Christina Brehmer and Ellen Streidt, both from East Germany. It is Szewinska's seventh Olympic medal after winning gold in the 4x100m in Tokyo (1964) and the 200m events in Mexico City (1968), silver in the 200m and long jump events in Tokyo and bronze in the 100m in Mexico City and the 200m events in Munich (1972).
