A boat in the waters of Chebayesh marsh in the Mesopotamian marshes that are in the delta of the Tigris in Ahwar. The Arab population of the marshlands is called Ma'dan. But many of them have been forced to leave the area due to the harsh conditions. In 2016, the UNESCO named the Iraqi marshlands a world heritage site. The Chebayesh marsh is in the Mesopotamian or Iraqi marshlands of southern Iraq, north of Basra. Locals inhabitants live since thousands of years of buffaloes breeding and fishing. Due to the dams built by Turkey and Iran in the Tigris and Euphrates and their tributaries, the amount of water reaching the marshes has been reduced. Environmental disastrous effects derives also from Saddam Hussein's decision to divert the Tigris and Euphrates waters away from the Marshes in revenge of Shiites of the area.
