Girls at Halima's school are taught the benefits of marrying later, the dangers of early pregnancy and the basics of saving money that might allow for a greater degree of independence. Families of girls like Halima who join a special programme run by Save the Children are paid $30 (27 euros) per term to encourage them to allow girls to go to school. The predominately Muslim and ethnically Somali region has suffered generations of marginalisation by the government in Nairobi, leaving it undeveloped and insecure. The area is plagued by Islamic militancy and armed rivalries among pastoralist clans.
