With his parachute lying beside him, a French paratrooper mans his automatic weapon during the "Operation Castor" attack on Dien Bien Phu, Indochina, Nov. 20, 1953. Several thousand French and Vietnamese paratroopers who cropped in the neighborhood, occupied the important Viet Minh base almost without resistance. Dien Bien Phu, which is 120 miles west of Hanoi and 10 miles from the border of Laos, was overrun by the Viet Minh in their conquest of the Thai country early in 1952. It was the base of enemy forces which invaded Laos and threatened the capital, Luang Prabang last spring. (AP Photo)
