Serbian inhabitants leave the Croatian city of Vukovar after an 87-day siege. Prior to the battle of Vukovar, Serbs constituted 36.28% of the town's population. The town's population was largely integrated, with an unusually high percentage of mixed marriages and people describing themselves as "Yugoslavs" rather than Serbs or Croats. Although the battle was a significant and symbolic loss for Croatia, which did not regain control of the town until 1998, it was also a very costly victory for the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA ) and helped gain international support for Croatian independence. As such, it is widely regarded as a crucial turning point in the course of the war. Vukovar, YUGOSLAVIA - 23/11/1991.
