Yevgeny Primakov, than the advisor of Russian President Gorbachev, in picture dated 27 April 1991 in Paris. Former spymaster and Middle East expert Primakov, 68, finally emerged from the shadows 11 September 1998, as deputies thrust Russia's reclusive former chief diplomat and former director of the KGB's foreign intelligence service into the limelight and approved him as the prime minister to rescue the country's crippled economy. Born in Kiev in October 1929, Primakov began his lengthy career in 1956 when he first put his foot on the apparatchik ladder to become deputy head of the state committee for radio and television, a propaganda department. He was recalled to government in January 1996 as a replacement for Andrei Kozyrev, the foreign minister.
