Ramon Mercader, aka Jacques Mornard and Frank Jackson, the assassin of Leon Trotsky, bandaged from the beating given him by bodyguards after his attack on Trotsky, is questioned by Colonel Leandro Sanchez Salazar, chief of detectives, in Mexico City, Aug. 22, 1940. Sanchez Salazar probed Mercader for hours, questioning the true story of his assault. The police are not convinced that it was merely an "ideological disillusionment" suffered by Mercader that caused him to commit the crime. (AP Photo)
