TO GO WITH AFP STORY (FILES) A file picture taken on March 23, 1945 shows British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (L) walking with General Bernard Law Montgomery near the Rhine river in Germany during an advance by Allied troops. The commander of Allied ground troops, Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery aka ''Monty'' had became a hero to his troops and a British idol owing to his victory at El Alamein, northern Egypt, where his Eighth Army routed Rommel's forces on November 2, 1942. In 1943, Churchill approved along with US president Franklin Roosevelt and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin the Allied landings in Normandy, and on D-Day he announced the invasion to parliament at noon. The ceremonies to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the landing in June 2014 are to be attended by an A-list of international leaders.
