AP Historical Hard Drive 2009
Thousands of Cypriots thronged to Greek Orthodox Churches over the Island January 15 to sign, a ??sPlebiscite??? demanding union with Greece. Both leftist and rightist parties combined in the campaign which continued through the following week. No incidents were reported during the ??sPolling??? although the island towns were placed out of bounds to British troops. The campaign was begun by speeches from Greek Religious dignitaries and educational leaders in Nicosia, the capital, Saturday night, January 14. All Government officials were warned, say reports from the island, that if they participated in the plebiscite they would be infringing Cyprus Government regulations.
