AP Historical Hard Drive 2009
Russian Army soldiers ride an APC, leading a convoy of supply trucks and gasoline tankers to the village of Gorlovka, Georgia, some 90 km (65 miles) south-west of the Capital of Tbilisi on Tuesday, April 4, 1994. Some 1500 ethnic Orthodox Russians have lived in this village and surrounding area for more than 150 years, and have suffered severe food and fuel shortages as a result of the civil wars in Georgia. The Russian government sent this convoy, protected by the Russian army, to get needed supplies and fuel to Russians in the area to help with their spring planting and farming. The Russian government is increasingly asked to defend the interests of Russians still living in former Soviet Republics. (AP Photo/Vladimir Svartsevich)
