AP Historical Hard Drive 2009
The white rings of vapor around the nose of this Grumman Hellcat plane, warming up on the flight deck of a U.S. Navy carrier, result from condensation of moisture on tips of propeller's three blades, shown in 1944. Rapid change of pressure and consequent drop in temperature creates the phenomenon when atmospheric conditions are just right. As the rings are formed at the propeller tips they move back toward the wings. (AP Photo)
