AP Historical Hard Drive 2009
A soldier of the 184th Regiment, 7th Army Division, hit in the foot and head is treated by the medic and put on a litter to be carried to the rear, April 1945, in Okinawa. Conscious and fairly rational, he was in great pain but could not be given morphine because of his head wound. As he was put on the stretcher he grasped the medic around the neck and held on for several seconds, then he stopped writhing and brought his hands together as in prayers. (AP Photo)
