AP Historical Hard Drive 2009
Everything was all set at the White House in Washington on Jan. 24, 1940 to make a picture of President Franklin D. Roosevelt accepting a 300-pound birthday cake with each of its 58 candles wrapped with a photo static copy of a check for $100, representing donations of labor unions to the campaign against infantile paralysis. But, at the last minute, word was received that the cake had broken to pieces when a truck bringing it to the White House bumped over a snow rut. Shown with the chief executive are William Green, AFL President, Mary Louise Winter and Elinor Myrup (right). Roosevelt got a check for $5,000 as a donation for campaign against infantile paralysis.
