Battle between the ironclads, Monitor and Merrimac, in Hampton Roads, Va., on March 9, 1862, showing the Monitor, in far center, firing on the Merrimac, at left. Joining in the fight are the Union frigates, Congress, right, and the Cumberland, far right. Firing point blank at each other for four hours, sometimes only 50 yards apart, the Monitor and Merrimac drew apart, the battle draw. Lieut.
