Most of the Sosua Jewish settlement in the Dominican Republic looks like this as seen on January 9, 1941. When building was begun, the settlers imported from the United States 120,000 square feet of metal roofing, 500 gallons of paint and more that 4,000 pounds of nails. They used lumber from their own woods. Jewish settlers, many from Germany and Austria, came to the Dominican Republic after the 1938 invitation of Rafael Trujillo, the country's strongman. (AP Photo)
