AP Historical Hard Drive 2007
The now-deserted Mulberry Grove plantation near Savannah, GA, where Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, is the site for this marker, which was unveiled at a program marking the first-day sales of the Whitney one-cent stamps on Oct. 8, 1904. Pulling the cord to unveil the marker are Lucy Dodo and Lindsey P. Henderson Jr., officials in the children of the American Revolution. Looking on is Alden H. Whitney of Washington, kinsman of the inventor. (AP Photo)
