AP Historical Hard Drive 2007
People are seen crowding in front of one of the three official Wechselstube (change booth) in Berlin, Germany, February 19, 1949, where the East-Mark and the West-Mark, the two new official currencies can be exchanged. This one at the Zoo is closed after the exchange rate dropped to six East Marks to one West Mark and and was quickly sold out of East Marks. The people are waiting and hoping that it will open again today. The new Deutsche (German) Mark was introduced midnight of June 18th and is valid since June 19th, 1948 replacing the old Reichsmark.
