Dr. William Beebe, left, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Otis Barton lean against the bathysphere in which they sank 2,510 feet below the ocean surface off Bermuda on Aug. 11, 1934. Beebe had a telephone connection with an assistant and relayed what he saw through the heavy quartz window during the deep sea observation. Barton took photographs and moving pictures. They broke their own record again on Aug. 15 when they descended 3,028 feet. (AP Photo)
