A spectacular fire on Riverside Drive near Grant's tomb, the night of December 21, 1928, badly damaged the $2,000,000 Riverside Church under construction to replace the Park Avenue Baptist Church. The church, a Gothic structure, the exterior of which was practically completed, was known as the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. church because of Mr. Rockefeller's contributions towards its construction.
