A comorant takes flight near the site of dredging at the first of several emergency cleanups on the Duwamish River in Seattle, Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003. About 7 acres of shoreline and marine sediment there are contaminated with cancer-causing PCBs (polychlorinated byphenyls), mercury, phthalates (compounds that make plastics flexible) and more than two dozen other chemicals. Before it was dredged and straightened into a shipping canal in the early 1900s, the Duwamish River squiggled through marshlands teeming with salmon, clams, ducks and other wildlife. Today the waterway flowing through the city's major industrial corridor is so contaminated, it's a 5 1/2-mile-long Superfund site and still a major source of food for poor, immigrant families living in the area.(AP Photo/Elaine Thompson)
