Blackburn Rovers' Dave Whelan is placed on a stretcher by paramedics and colleagues after breaking a leg in the FA Cup Final against Wolverhampton Wanderers, at Wembley Stadium, London, May 7, 1960. Wolves won the final 3-0. Whelan made headlines for the wrong reasons at the 1960 cup final when he challenged Wolves' winger Norman Deeley for the ball and broke his own left shinbone. His career was effectively over at age 23. Whelan went into business, owning discount and sports stores before taking over the ownership of little known Wigan Athletic, which was in the lowest division of the English Football League and seemingly going nowhere. With his businesses booming, Whelan, whose fortune is now estimated at 75 million pounds (US$135 million, euro108.75 million), guided the club through a series of promotions culminating in its arrival among the powerhouses of English soccer.
