This aerial view shows a broken dyke at Abbenbroek, on the island of Putten, Southwest of Rotterdam, Holland, Feb. 5, 1953. This is one of the areas severely hit by recent floods in Europe that left nearly one million acres of farm land underwater in the Netherlands, where more than 1,800 people died. Although the chance of a major flood is remote, all Dutch experts agree, Thursday Sept. 1 , 2005, it could happen again. The impact of such a disaster in the heart of the country, the area containing Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, and a population would be unthinkable. Amsterdam is more than 2.5 meters (more than 8 feet) under sea level at low tide. In a flood, people might survive by climbing on the roofs, but in 1953, as happened in New Orleans this week, many collapsed. (AP Photo)
